It Is Not a TOOMAR

Things have been on the back burner a little for NetXperiment as some health issues cropped up that needed investigating. As per the title, it has been confirmed that I don’t have a brain tumour. *cheers*. I do hope the headaches etc go away as I am a grouchy grouch at the moment after the weeks of “discomfort”.

So on with the blogging and back to the fundraising!

You can tell from my blog, I like video-type information clips (saves having to have an attention span that can last 2-3 pages of text online…do you have problems reading large amounts of text on a computer screen? I know I do…maybe the newer generations won’t). So here is a clip that I found on a myspace page (caution: has some loud music embedded on his page) . I know I have seen it before somewhere, but as the clip is not attributed I can’t do much more than link to the source. If you know where this was from originally please add a comment! Good for explaining to kids or others what MS actually is.

Comet McNaught And I

The last couple of nights have seen my partner and I out on a high spot near where we live checking out the latest, and brightest, wanderer into our view. Comet McNaught (yay for Coonanbarabran astronomers) has been very visible just after dark, but alas low cloud over the Blue Mountains has meant that seeing it actually “set” has not been possible.

But fear not, here is a movie we took tonight of the comet for those that have missed it.

The tools used were a pair of 12 x 80 binoculars on a tripod and a Sanyo Xacti CA6 digital video camera. ANd for all you visitors to this blog to see this, please head on over to my MS donation page, the Great NetXperiment to contribute to finding a cure, and cause for this baffling disease.

Never Let Someone Tell You You Shouldn’t Do Something

I think we can all learn a lesson from the rabbit (and not the voice on the video!). This is my NetXperiment inspriational video of the day.

Squidoo Loves NetXperiment Part 2!

Squidoo!

As you probably know the NetXperiment Squidoo Lens is currently the #1 Squidoo Philanthropy site as well as being the #5 ranked site overall.

If you haven’t visited there I would really love you to click here

- add a comment
- and a (5!) star rating,
- if you really love us add us to Favourites by clicking the green star
- and Digg on the right hand side (this one REALLY helps us get known in the big wide internet).

Squidoo (for those that are wondering) is a social knowledge sharing network, where you can make individual pages (called lenses) on the super special things you love, or hate. By adding some of the modular money making sections, like cafe press or Amazon etc. the site can earn affiliate fees for any sales made through it. Many people elect to have those royalties be transferred straight to a non-profit that is on the Squidoo approved charity list…so can you see where this is going?

Some time ago I approached Squidoo to have Foundation 5 Million (where the NetXperiment contributions go to) to be listed as an approved charity. Well it looks very much like this will happen! This will be awesome if it comes off because then we can have the trickle effect from Squidoo also adding to contributions to the $1 Million.

The good thing about lenses is that you don’t if you don’t want to, need to update them very regularly. I update NetXperiment’s a fair bit to keep it fresh and add things like YouTube videos, but if you pick a timeless enough topic you can just set…and forget!

Charity Begins At 127.0.0.1

In a bold and daring move the AtomicMPC (Atomic Maximum Power Computing) forum community has challenged its local rival OCAU (Overclockers Australia) to see who will be the greatest contributor to the Great NetXperiment.

Read the challenge HERE

Long time friendly competition has existed between AtomicMPC and OCAU which has, in the past, been fought out on the gaming battlefield. This new challenge will take both groups to new heights in ingenuity to ensure their name is bigger than their competitor’s when the clock stops ticking and the Contribution Cloud is frozen.

As it stands OCAU have zero contributions as yet, but this is sure to change due to the big heartedness of that group of fine geeks

When Fundraising Goes BAAAAAAAAAAD

Before I came up with the idea for NetXperiment I had participated in a few fundraising efforts for MS reasearch. What you are about to see is the results of one of those efforts.

In fact it didn’t start off as fundraising at all. It started as a whole heap of trash talking on the AtomicMPC forums about the yearly footy tipping competiton I was running. Noddy (Brendon) challenged Gramyre (Me) to a winner decides the punishment type of deal-e-o. Bad luck for him he lost.

Here is what happened. This is a national television station here in Australia, so his humiliation could not be more public…apart from the fact it will now be seen by gazillions more on the internets! *maniacal laugh*

p.s. I lost the year after but managed to weasel my way out of punishment by having a MS relapse *more maniacal laughter*

NetXperiment #1 Philanthropy Lens on Squidoo

Amazing news and so exciting! It was pointed out to me that The Great NetXperiment Squidoo page is ranked #1 philanthropy lens on Squidoo.

Squidoo in Seth Godin’s (co-founder) words

“When I conceived of Squidoo in March of 2005, my goal was to build an engine for philanthropy, a self-sustaining website that would make it easy for ordinary folks with passion and expertise to raise money for charity. At the same time, I hoped it would provide a platform for individuals and organizations to expose their ideas, their businesses and their expertise to the world at large.”

To be ranked number 1 in the very area that this whole Web2.0 site was conceived is very exciting as well as quite humbling.
